Last Day of Summer School

I can hardly believe three weeks have passed me by! My class was excellent. They really worked hard at learning the standards and today I will be assessing them with the SCOE Reading Lions assessment. When you teach an intervention class like this in my district you have to administer a “pre” and “post” test to show growth. I am excited to see the growth my kids have made in the three areas we have focused on: 1) Multiple meaning words, 2) Literary Forms, and 3) Spelling. We’re having a partytres leches. I had a “tres leches” cake for the first time at my birthday party last month and loved it. As a result, I have been telling my students (especially those of Hispanic ones) JOKINGLY how much I looooooove tres leches. They laugh at me and poke fun at how much I say it (it helps the learning environment to have a few lines that evoke laughter on call). Well, as my luck would have it, turns out one of my students mother works in a Mexican bakery and she SAYS she’s bringing in a tres leches for the class today at our party. To quote Nacho Libre/Jack Black: “My life is good, REAL good.”

I love tres leches!!! It is quite a treat. It’s getting much easier to find here in Chicago, too than it was years ago.

Great job with the kids!!!! You should be proud of yourself and them!!

Thanks Jessica. For anyone not familiar with the cake, here’s the Wikipedia article on it. It means literally “3 milks.”

Party time! Those kids must think you are nuts sometimes, but I bet that learning sneaks in because of it!

They call me nuts and when state test scores are posted, their parents request they be in my class . . . go figure?

    Hey Damien,

Maybe you’ve read it on my blog already, but I’m going to be participating in Blogathon 2007 to benefit VH1 Save The Music Foundation which does all it can to keep music education within the public school system..as a teacher and a musician, I thought you might be an excellent “guest blogger” for me during the blogging marathon. If you’d like to write a music/education/what it means to you related article , I would love ot have you participate with me!!!

    Let me know!
