Friday the 13th :: Fear, Respect, or Disbelief

I haven’t been superstitious most of my life but lately I have been paying a little more credence to it, out of respect. I remember many years ago I was golfing with a friend and we paired up with another couple people since it was a busy day on the course. I remember the tough woman that was with us said she sold used Harleys and she had a lot to say about Friday the 13th. She told us how her house was robbed and one of her animals was killed and at the time I thought to myself that it was just an unfortunate coincidence. She said the next 3 motorcycles she sold that day were all defective in some way which usually never happens she said.

Maybe I was afraid to believe Friday the 13th had any powers. Maybe it was denial? I still don’t really worry about things being “hexed” on Friday the 13th but now I think I am afraid to just blow it off. I think we should respect an idea that so many people fear. BUT, fear is not the same thing as respect. I’ll be passive, mellow, relaxed tomorrow on the last day of school, but I will be raising an eyebrow here and there to see what the Friday the 13th might be sending our way. Are you superstitious about Friday the 13th?

I’ve never been superstitious about Friday The 13th or most any of the more common superstitions like black cats, breaking mirrors, etc. My first husband, though, OMG. He was born and raised in Mexico and as I’m sure you know, there are superstitions galore over there.

When I was pregnant with my first baby, there was a solar eclipse. Of course, I was not aware of the superstition that pregnant women should wear red clothing during a solar eclipse in order to protect the baby from developing a cleft lip and palate. I was working at the police department at the time and they aren’t all that fond of accessorizing your uniform with anything other than what they issue you.

I told my ex that was ridiculous, but he was completely freaked out.

Have you heard of La Llorona who cries for her children she drowned? That one is huge in Guadalajara, MX.

Oh yes. The Mexican culture is rich with culture AND fascinating superstition. I’m white/Irish but I often wish I was born over there. You may recall I studied Spanish in Mexico the summer of 1996 at the University of Guadalajara.

Thanks for that comment ;)
