from: PR4 to: PR0

The past 3 days and today (7/26/08) my Google Page Rank appears to be back. I tried playing aloof and I didn’t write a gushing post since I have been wrong before. Sometimes the toolbar malfunctions, this is something I have verified by many sites and blogs out there. More often than not though, it’s correct. The long story made short is that yes, indeed my PageRank has gone back to the PR4 it was when it got spanked months ago. In this post, I tell you in a few sentences exactly what I did to get it back (I’ve been keeping a careful journal on everything!)

Fearing I might be jumping the gun, I emailed one of my blog mentors and friend Derek Semmler yesterday and asked him to verify the PR4 change for me. He’s seen me go through the PR0 ordeal with this blog and even written a few really cool articles about PageRank hits on his blogs. He said that sadly my new rank wasn’t registering on his toolbar. (Thanks again for checkin’ Derek) So, I kind of gave up and forgot about it. That’s why today after seeing it still in my toolbar and verifying the change with some 3rd party sources, I was elated to see it was indeed a true PR4.

My understanding via Matt Cutts’ blog is that Google has “expired” some of the prior penalties. In addition to that, here is what I have done. It’s nothing mysterious but it takes some effort. My attitude toward success has always been that I don’t mind work when I know it’s worth something. Some of you may have seen my fave Woody Allen quote come up once in a while here, “80% of success is showing up.” If you are doing the right things by Google to get PageRank success, I’d even make that an 85 instead of an 80:

1) Guestblog monthly: Set a specific number as a goal. Ask higher ranked blogs if you can guestblog and link back to your index in the post (usually a signature looks the least pompous). I’ve been averaging 5 guestblogs a month in the last 6 months. All my guestblogs are represented by an intro here and you can read them through this link: Those backlinks affect PageRank. You can also invite bloggers to guestblog on yours. You usually get a link from their blog announcing their work. A classic example of this is Chelle’s recent PageRank post on mine:

2) Every sponsored post/link on your blog needs to have the attribute: rel=”nofollow” in its relative links. I won’t bother explaining, just do it. It took me 4 days in between work, wife, and screaming kids to change all mine to this. I pity anyone who has more than say 100. But if you make it a practice, you will never have a problem with this issue. I could say more on this, please ask questions if you have them. My assumption is that most people get this already. Obviously I recently learned it :)

3) Write quality posts to a niche audience (as much as possible) that people read, link to, and comment on. (Reading and inking to parts are way more important but comment have ripple effects for lnkage, traffic, etc.) I’ve written extensively on the value of a blog post but this subject is a bit subjective. I doubt any SEO writers will be subscribing as a result. However, if what you do is kind of like my writing, please check out the series, it was written with you in mind: V.A.L.U.E. of a Blog.

4) Show your indefinable magic as a blogger! How could I leave that one out. Don’t forget to be yourself. Remember that the dead splash page of Firefox, for example, is a 6/10! Who reads that? Blogs started out as WEBLOGS where interesting people shared their research, later their thoughts and quotes, and finally they are now a place where anyone can self-publish anything. Let your light shine.

Folks, it’s been a long rocky road since they spanked my PageRank (man that sounds bad doesn’t it ;). I am enjoying the smoothness now that it’s back. Like it or not, Google PageRank is an issue of economics and you should have it. So I am officially not a hater of Google PageRank, they have done right by me. It seems like there are as many ranks out there as there are acne treatments, but Google has the most clout.

If you want to know more regarding this topic, just ask. I think I’m done for now. This is meant to be in fact a psychology niche blog most the time. Maybe you can persuade me to write some other stuff I’ve done to improve my blog’s rank. Now go jump in the pool (that’s where I’m headed). I’ve also reignited my other two blogs and it’s time to rev some speed. You might say I’ve had 3 car covers on in my blog garage and now they are coming off. Thanks for being a part of this ride.

I am assuming you no longer post for PayPerPost? Just curious since you have a badge for them on your sidebar.

I absolutely still work for PayPerPost. I just make sure to follow Google’s guidelines of including the rel=”nofollow” attribute in all paid links. I have said numerous times that I would accept a PR0 before I let Google tell me how to make money. They must be over the penalties against mentioning that company.

Hi Damien! Congratulation for getting your page rank back. About PayPerPost, do they allow us to set the links to “nofollow”? Is it against their term? And when you were in PR0, is it difficult for you to get the opportunity/task?

Thanks Dunn. Good questions that I have answers for. First, it is not against theterms of PayPerPost to set rel=”nofollow” unless the advertiser makes that a condition. Note: don’t be mistaken when the TOS reads that your blog must not have a no follow condition in the robot. They do require that your blog doesn’t have that, but that is different from nofollow on individual posts. They even give you the code in the tos. You should read it.

Second: As PR0 I got at least 2-3 opps a week which wasn’t much. Now that I am PR4 I will get many more. Between that and other sources I have been able to make from $1-300/ month but that’s putting in a lot of hours.

Since my blog got PR0, I never get any opp to do now in Blogsvertise neither in Smorty. In PayPerPost, the opp never available to me. :(

That’s common. I didn’t get opps from them either. Smorty even posts on their site that their clients need to remove any mention of PayPerPost. Hypocrites.

I’m a newbie to blogging, and I don’t understand half of what you are saying–can you tell me where to find out more info on sponsored links so I can do whatever it is you are advising up there? Also, wondering how you find out about your rank and so forth. I am also a psychology blogger and I think I have pretty good content, as that’s where my focus is–but, man! How does one get up to speed on this other stuff? I’m more writer than techie. Also, would love to do a guest post with you sometime–I’m sure I could come up with something to fit your theme. Would love to have you on mine also. Thanks! Laurel

Hi Laurel. Sounds good on the guest post exchange. It’s hard learning the ropes of blogging. BUT, what’s harder, publishing a book or learning blogging? I guess it depends.

You could start with a search on making money with your blog or something like that. Here’s a post I wrote recently on mmol. I use 5 total but only 2 are the main income. Please use the button on my home page to access PayPerPost as I get $15 when your first opp is accepted.

Keep in touch with me on the guest blog.

Thanks Damien, I appreciate the reply and the help, and will use your PPP link when I sign up. I’ll keep you posted on the guest blog–was just on Zenhabits, so I guess I’m starting my monthly posts already! Laurel

Thanks, at least you are a 2. I know excellent writers who are trying to make money at it and are a PR0. Remember, good writing is a whole other issue. Static entry pages with two or three words have PR6, 8 etc. This is just a game you have to know the rules or you get spanked. The writing is the best part so don’t lose hope.

Um, I don’t know how to put this but…..

PageRank menas NOTHING! Ask any SEO guy worth his salt and he will tell you PageRank means nothing. It is only a visual indicator.

PageRank has nothing to do with how you are ranked in Google search results. NONE.

Andy Jenkins of StomperNet said in the latest series of SiteSeer videos said: “PageRank has nothing to do with how your site is ranked in Google” and he went on the say it only effects how often you are deep crawled by Googlebot.

Dan Theis, one of the best SEO guys in the country is part of StomperNet faculty.

Now I have watsted my time trying to convince you of this rather widely held fact, but hey, I am only trying to help. Good karma huh?

Chris, your rhetoric is good, especially with the sources you cite. I agree it doesn’t affect your placement in the searches. Google tells you that in one of their FAQ’s in Webmaster tools. I recognize you may not have been reading my blog long, or maybe you surfed in just for this post but let me just tell you that I am in 99% agreement with you.

Google PageRank is an objective algorithm that attempts to declare the “value” of a website. Anyone who has ever studied literature or film knows that you can make an algorithm to declare value of art.

Having said that, I make a significant amount of money each month doing sponsored posts and reviews to keep my blog afloat. ALL THESE COMOPANIES PREDICATE JOB OFFERS UPON GOOGLE PR.

I hope it changes but now that I am a PR4 I am already getting better offers on more interesting topics.

Thanks for webbing in dude. If you are interested in my site, check out the other posts in the series as a starting point. I think you will find we have a lot in common mentally towards PR.
