Life Lock: Real Identity Theft Protection
My friend Shelly over at This Eclectic Life wrote the other day about how she felt leery faxing her social security number and other personal information for a background check. She made some really good points about how in a school district, papers can get shuffled to the wrong desk and a non-employee through the office could even theoretically get a hold of it inadvertently. Having worked as a public school teacher for almost 10 years now I can tell you that the systems are not always perfect so she may have been right to not fax and pass on the guest storyteller job.
The fact is that for the seventh year in a row, identity theft tops the Federal Trade Commission’s complaint list, accounting for 36 percent of the 674,354 complaints received between January 1 and December 31, 2006. (source: consumeraffairs.com) Identity theft is here and it’s real, we need to protect ourselves. Apart from tips like Shelly’s wise advice to photocopy all your cards and keep them safe somewhere, there is a service called life lock that can help. It is a systematic validation of all transactions in your name. In other words, if you don’t approve it: it doesn’t get charged. That’s the basic gist of the service. There are more aspects to the protection it offers. Their site is amazing, including animated explanations of what they do. So what does it cost you might ask? LifeLock is only $10 per month or $110 per year per adult with discounts for students and children.
Whether you end up buying the service, I recommend you check out the site. It is very well made and educational on this topic.

I just heard a radio commercial for Life Lock yesterday. I’m going to check out their site. $10 a month for that kind of security and peace of mind seems totally reasonable.
