Halleluia, Derek! This is one of my pet peeves. I have four teenagers and they all participate in competitive sports to some extent. My son plays almost every sport and if it's not the coach criticizing something, it's some parent watching the game.

Honestly, with my complete lack of sports skills, I think it's fabulous that anyone could hit a ball with a bat to begin with, but these games are supposed to be fun.

If the kids have to worry about every little play or every mistake, it's no fun anymore.

Your post was awesome!!!

This is fantastic wisdom - it is awful how some parents get overworked about things like little league!! I find myself constantly remembering what it was like to be the kid now that I'm the mom and try to find that balance :) I'm going to have to read some other things you've written now!!

Great post Derek! Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us! I completely agree with you. I don't have kids yet, but I see this issue happening between my parents and their younger kids and even between my mom and dad. My mom in law is the total opposite, she's perfect this way, always listening and encouraging, just being there when you need to talk. That's how I want to be. It's so important to be a friend to your kids, not just their parent.

I fully agree with what you said. In addition, the encouragement to children is also important to their growth.

Great post Derek, thanks again. I especially liked the thought "If you feel that criticism is necessary, save it for a casual conversation days after the performance, not immediately afterwards on the trip home."

I have been wrestling with "waiting" to criticize and to parent until a better time. I tend to react wherever I am with my son. Since we parents are adults, we should be able to exercise restraint and think about what is really worth saying ... a lot of the stuff I give my son is just thinking out loud and should it happen to be something that hurts his feelings, he will never forget it. I know this based on experiences with my own dad. Kids tend to remember the dark stuff and forget all the great memories. Solution? Lessen the number of dark times.

We're in control now and that means responsibility. One day we'll be in our empty houses praying our kids come to visit us. If we criticize them all the time, what good is that going to do them or us in 20 years?

Thanks for donating some dad energy to the Funny Farm, you blew this one out of the water man - I appreciate it! The best part about you guys guest posting is that I just get to kick back for few ;)
