One Word Mantras

“How fragile we are.”
Sting

A single word can add value to your life. In college I read that in a book and tried it out. I bought a pack of 3×5″ cards on sale and searched my mind and dictionary for words to concentrate on. This had a profound impact on the anxiety and depression I suffered in that time. There were many I went though. I would write the word on a card and tape it to my bathroom mirror. I remember one word I had, for example, was the word “transcend.” I would repeat this word many times in my mind while brushing my teeth and routine grooming. The word took on new and deeper significance during this time and throughout my day. It was the most positive word I could think of and it was a word I wanted more of in my life. Sometimes I would be in class of just round about town and I would hear a word which I would in turn use in this manner. In a way, it is like a mini mantra or … mantra “concentrate.”

Part of fighting depression and anxiety is coming to the fight prepared and armed. A word chosen wisely and meditated on is a powerful tool weapon anyone can bring to the fight we call humanity.

Being the Hope our Youth Needs

Friday, June 20th, 2008

Driving home from the ball game tonight my wife and I nearly hit a 10 year old kid on his bike. He decided he would play chicken with our multi-ton minivan. Needless to say we honked. What the hell is happening with the youth of today? I know they have been saying that forever but Sarah and I see it up close and personal every day we teach. A place it is getting particularly scary is in middle and high school. But back to my story … I flipped the car around much to my wife’s dismay since the babies were both crabby and crying since we left the game. I chased the kid into a culdesac and gave him my 2 cents worth on his little game. He said sorry and his middle school aged friends did their “chill out dude” thing (oh how I hear that in my sleep). I told him I was a teacher and if one of my students did that not only would I tell their parents but I would tell the police. I am sure they all had a good laugh at the bald guy who pulled over to blabber something. Nonetheless, that kid could die that way. I have reached down to get something and nearly hit the curb before, what if that was a kid? I was pretty upset about it.

My point of this short diary entry is not to disparage youth. It is the most beautiful time of our humanity in many ways. But we all need to be making u-turns and saying hello to the death rockers we pass in the mall et al. I just wanted to put that out to the blogosphere. What do you think about being the hope our youth needs?

Writers Block Library Cure

Thursday, February 14th, 2008

A very important part of learning how to blog is learning how to get out of a “funk” or a case of writer’s block. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, the Library is a place to find humanity in life, and I will add to that a cure for writer’s block. Let me illustrate with a word-simulated trip through the Hesperia library:

“I enter and go to the section on computers, cyberculture and software. After I pick up a few books I proceed to the psychology and self-improvement section. I find a cool one on relaxation techniques and put that with the others under my arm. After that I need to put my books in a tote bag because they are about to fall from my arm. I go through the biography section and see too many names to check out. I make a mental note to myself to read them all … ALL.”

Your experience will vary depending on your tastes and curiosity. One thing I do know is that a trip to the library will fill your muse with ideas. I’m going again Saturday with my son, so get ready for some inspired stuff up in here. ;)
