Friday the 13th :: Fear, Respect, or Disbelief

Friday, June 13th, 2008

I haven’t been superstitious most of my life but lately I have been paying a little more credence to it, out of respect. I remember many years ago I was golfing with a friend and we paired up with another couple people since it was a busy day on the course. I remember the tough woman that was with us said she sold used Harleys and she had a lot to say about Friday the 13th. She told us how her house was robbed and one of her animals was killed and at the time I thought to myself that it was just an unfortunate coincidence. She said the next 3 motorcycles she sold that day were all defective in some way which usually never happens she said.

Maybe I was afraid to believe Friday the 13th had any powers. Maybe it was denial? I still don’t really worry about things being “hexed” on Friday the 13th but now I think I am afraid to just blow it off. I think we should respect an idea that so many people fear. BUT, fear is not the same thing as respect. I’ll be passive, mellow, relaxed tomorrow on the last day of school, but I will be raising an eyebrow here and there to see what the Friday the 13th might be sending our way. Are you superstitious about Friday the 13th?

Smooth Spots

Arrivals are great. Unfortunately, they are often hard to reach. Evenb when you do sometimes you have to get up and work even harder to get to the next one. A good friend of mine just graduated from 2 massage therapy schools. She’s headed now for the fruits of her labors. But is it really fruit? Some might argue the road ahead is always paved with work, work, and more work. I’d like to hope it all leads to improvement.

Whatever religion you claim, be it Christian or Buddhist or even atheist, your beliefs are likely followed in the direction of improvement. By that I mean you hope your state of being will improve. I think the best thing you can do in your life is believe in heaven, but I am not a preacher. Other forms of consciousness raising like other religions all have some sort of END that ideally ends you up better than you began. And so I imagine, just like in the faith that I believe in, there are rough roads sometimes. They tell you the tough stuff makes you stronger and that “into every life a little rain must fall” etc. These are the great times to lean on God or go to church or get prayer, read books on “enlightenment” whatever … Then there are the other times, the good times. These are the times a good friend and Pastor calls “smooth spots.” I’ve had a rough past 12 months in many ways but right now I seem to be coasting. It’s such a wonderful feeling and I wish to express the hope to anyone out there on storms in the abyss that your cloud does have a silver lining. As you hope in the journey you will hit smooth spots. One friend of mine just graduated from How is your road going?

This morning I saw an amazing view.

When I got to work, I saw another.
