Postcards from the Funny Farm

Someone asked me today, “Why do you like writing?”
Well, good question. That’s was a tough one . . . at first! Then, after I was rolling on the grass out back with the dog and my 2.5 year old, something like this below came to me: here goes nothing!
I like writing because: A simple “sunset” becomes a “cacophony of auburns, yellows and oranges swirling ‘twixt cloud formations stretching across the madras horizon.”

A funny day becomes:

“Scott had developed a shocking trend of “mooning” people on the playground. It was first brought to my attention by the noon-duty aides and then later by other students.” (more …)

Ordinary food becomes:

“I just ate some really good chicken lunch. It was from a place called “El Pollo Loco.” I know Californians will recognize the brand. If you aren’t, it’s a lime/lemon chicken recipe that is known for it’s healthy nature.” (More …)

A boring day’s memory of working at Pizza Hut 15 years ago becomes:

“Of course I was acting. I found it camp to the extreme. Eliseo looked up from the dough mixer, his dark shirt spotted with flour all over. He had a look of utter amazement that a “gringo” such as myself would be interested in Ranchera music.” (More …)

Driving by misspelled signs in the neighborhood becomes:

To me, it’s a blast. Anyway. It’s a fact that here in Victorville, there apparently hasn’t been the same level of concern about orthography. This is evidenced by our many abominable spelling mistakes in store signs, marquees, and the like. Off the top of my head, I’d say the possessive s is the most common culprit. Folks seem to be widely confused that the possessive singular gets ’s and it is only used for possession. A simple suffix s on the end of a word is used for plural nouns and single subject predicate verbs. (More …)

And in summary, a writer’s life just gets a little more colorful, a little more sweeter, a little more deeper than it was before writing, and a little more in sync.
