You’re Never too Old to Go Back to School

I’ve been talking to people for years about something my Dad told me when I was just a young teenager. I remember working some terrible part-time job helping a guy sweep up parking lots and complaining about it night and day. My dad said to me:

“Do a lot of work for a little money when you are young and when you are old you will do a little work for a lot of money.”

I agree with that for the most part. Of course there are bound to be some exceptions. So when is it too late to have this ethic? I have been talking to many people lately just by chance that are thinking of going back to college. One is 32, and another 38, others have been older than that. All of these people have two things in common: 1) They work full-time and 2) they have kids. When I shared with each of them my input about how and where they should go back to college, they all shared the same sentiment: “I am so old, do you know how old I will be when I get where you are???” I tell them another aphorism someone told me once at a young age:

“You will be 40, 50, 60, 70 one day you agree? Well, do you want to go through these ages WITH or WITHOUT a degree?

I hope all my friends I have been talking with do go back and achieve their college and career goals. You are never too old to go to college unless you’re dead, and then of course there isn’t much more to learn anyway.

If you are struggling with this in your life and don’t know the first step or if you think college is impossible for you, please leave me a comment or email. I’d love to talk to you. I think it is possible for anyone who has the desire. Let me help you see why I think that.

Hey i totally agree that your never to old to go back to college.

I am the second youngest in my class at 25 and the oldest is well into her 50’s. Having such a mixture of ages has really added to my learning experience.

That is awesome Claire. It’s the best gamble you can make in life. So are you practicing as an intern?

“I’m considering a master’s degree.” -Nola Ochs, 95 (great-grandmother of 16 and the world’s oldest person to graduate from college. She earned a B.A. in history in May from Fort Hays State University.

‘Nuff said.

I was always dragging my feet in school. I wanted the degree without the work. Still, it may very well be in my destiny, just not in this season.

Kudos for helping others see that college is a possibility no matter their age!

ROSEMARIE I LOVE THAT QUOTATION!!! Thank you for posting it! College isn’t for everybody, but age should never be an excuse. I have to be careful to not sound judgemental. My intent is to foster success!

Here’s more about Nola! We can all learn from her.

You ARE fostering good things. Keep it up!

Anybody can go to school at any time! You are right, you will be 40, 50 or even 90 with or without college, might as well do it!

I would think it would be a hard thing to do with kids, though…I’m glad I finished before I had them and I have zero desire to go back to get another degree, but I agree, if it’s something someone wants to do, they should go for it regardless of age!!

It’s one thing you can place a sure bet on. I’m glad you agree! Most people with college do agree.
